The Digital Futures West Sussex roadshow is making waves around the county, with its recent stop-off in Midhurst proving to be a particularly energising event.

The panel session at the end was a highlight for many attendees, as panellists including Red River’s very own Simon Pringle, along with Richard Hopkins from Fargro Limited, Luke Mead from the LMS Group and Sara MacGregor from LEAP Create, discussed the common challenges facing their respective SMEs – recruitment being the most significant.

This is a problem that affects many industries, but it is particularly pronounced in the digital sector. With the growing demand for skilled technologists, businesses are struggling to find the right talent to fill their open positions. This is a problem that requires a multi-faceted approach to solve, including changes to government policy, the education system, and business practices.

One of the most significant challenges facing the industry is how it is perceived by the wider public.
Careers in technology and the digital sector are often seen as geeky or nerdy, which can discourage young people from pursuing them. It is up to industry leaders, educators, and policymakers to change this perception and promote the vast opportunities that are available in this field.

This mind-set needs to change if we are going to attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

The panellists at the roadshow all agreed that the industry needs to think beyond the problems

As Richard Hopkins noted, if we don’t solve the recruitment issue, Global Britain will just be a sound bite. This is a sobering thought and underscores the urgency of the problem.

However, there is cause for optimism.

The roadshow has demonstrated that there are many enlightened businesses, public sector workers, and educators who understand the challenges facing the industry and are working hard to find innovative solutions.
